During the Edgbaston Test match between India and England, Shubman Gill remained a topic of discussion over the first three days. On the first and second days of the match, Gill displayed his batting brilliance and made history by scoring an outstanding double century. However, on the third day of the match, a major accident involving the Indian captain was narrowly averted. During India's fielding, an England batsman played a powerful shot that hit Gill directly on the head, making him cry out in pain. However, the relief was that his eye was saved in this incident.
On Friday, 4 July, during the third day of the Test match at Edgbaston, England resumed their first innings from a score of 77. In just the second over of the day, Mohammed Siraj jolted England with two wickets in quick succession. After that, England’s star batter Harry Brook and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith stabilised the innings. Both adopted an aggressive approach and put pressure on the Indian bowlers. In response, Captain Gill brought spinners into the attack to try for a breakthrough. However, England's batters began targeting them as well.
During Brook’s aggressive play, Gill unexpectedly found himself in the line of fire. It happened in the 37th over, bowled by Ravindra Jadeja. Brook tried a ferocious cut shot on the over's second delivery. However, he failed to connect properly, and the ball edged off the bat and flew toward Gill, who was positioned at slip. The shot had so much power that the ball came at Gill with great speed, and the Indian captain misjudged it. He attempted to catch the ball as it came toward his head but was defeated by the pace, and the ball struck the left side of his head directly.
The ball was neither caught nor did it prevent runs—instead, it hit Gill hard on the head, and the Indian captain appeared in pain. The relief, however, was that his eye was spared. The ball hit just about an inch to an inch and a half away from his left eye. Had the ball struck his eye, it could have led to a serious injury and potentially posed a threat to his career. As soon as Gill was hit, Team India’s physio rushed onto the field and checked him for signs of concussion. Gill appeared fit during the assessment and resumed playing immediately.
